| 78 - CDESA (Computerized Electrodermal Stress Analysis) | Bob Langridge | Sep 2, 2002 | Bob Langridge | Nov 1, 2002 |
| Becky Langridge, BeckyHerbs@mchsi.com, 447-9784 There is a need of 30 volunteers before Oct. 9, 2002 for a free CEDSA test to help receive certification. This is a painless evaluation using acupressure points on the hands and feet to determine the flow of energy and balance of the body's systems. Testing will take about an hour. This type of testing is used widely in Europe and by a handful of professionals in the US. The testing can uncover hidden conditions long before our current traditional means detects them. This equates to treatment before serious deterioration of the individual. Contact Becky if you are interested in volunteering for this test program. | ||||

| 37 - Responsive Target ![]() | Grant Wood AEA, Ann Griffin | Nov 28, 2001 | Jack Murphy | Feb 9, 2003 |
| Build a target such as an oversize basketball hoop, or soccer goal, or circular target. A ball or other object is thrown at the target. When the target is hit, a response such as flashing lights or the sound of applause is generated. For use by children with disabilities. The objective of this project is to provide a target to be used by children with disabilities during gym class. The target should be usable with a soft 8 inch ball and other similar objects. Examples of the type of target desired are a basketball style hoop, soccer goal, or bulls-eye target. When the child successfully puts the ball through the target, a visual (lights) and audible (applause sound or similar) is produced. For these children, receiving the response is important to their enjoyment and development. The idea for this project was conceived by Ann Griffin of Grant Wood Area Education Agency and submitted to the Rockwell Collins Retiree Volunteers organization in 2001. It was designed and fabricated by Jack Murphy in 2002 and 2003. | ||||

| 159 - Switch adapted computer trackball | CompuPlace/Ecumenical Community Center-Lois Fergus | Dec 13, 2002 | ART RODERICK | May 11, 2005 |
| We have a track ball that was switch adapted by Remcraft at Stone Mt., GA. It has 3 external swithch input openings in the back (labeled rt btn--Lk btn--Lf btn). I have a Microsoft Easy Ball-- It is a large track ball for small children, but also good for individuals with limited movement. I am wondering if that can be adapted to allow it to be switch activated (similarly to the one we currently have). Related to that, could two switches ( or the switch input) be adapted so they could both perform the same function (ex.-Could they both be make to perform as a left button click) -for a person who tires with one hand and will then try to use the other hand? There is no urgent deadline for this project. I plan to attend the 1/09/03 meeting. Thank you | ||||

| 335 - Adaptive 'cash register' ![]() | Options of Linn County/Wayne Clayton & Jenny Cruz | Jan 30, 2009 | John Wauer | Apr 21, 2009 |
| We are requesting an adaptive 'cash register' that our consumers with autism can use effectively. Because most respond well with pictures, it would be ideal if a person could touch a picture of an item instead of having to type in a price. For example, a customer orders a coffee and a strawberry smoothie. The consumer would identify the 2 pictures they needed to touch, and then a total price would be shown. Then, if the customer pays with a couple dollars, the display would show the change required. Also, we may have 15-20 different items available at our 'shop', so there would need to be room for several picture choices. Thank you for your help. | ||||

I need it to be able to clamp on a table and/or wheelchair tray. I need it to be able to move in various directions, vertically and horizontally. The support needs to be curved deep enough so that the consumer's arm does not slide off easily. This is an important device for this consumer. It will reduce her frustrations and be able to work independently.

The object she chooses can drop down, a door open so she obtain the object easily that she requested. This would be so important in helping in early cognitive skills and cause and effect. This project needs to be small enough to have two choices that are visible but be able to sit on a table. John has a picture of something the parent saw on the internet (see below).

| This client is a 62 year old female who lives alone with Cerebral Palsy, a major depressive disorder and degenerative arthritis. In Sep, she tore her rotary cuff and required surgery. She is now wheelchair bound which could be permanent. She took her wheelchair to a local home service store to see if it could be repaired. She was told that it could be months before they hear anythin, let alone how long to get it fixed. She is fearful that the wheel will bend more or even break off. Then she would not have a way to ambulate to doctors appointments, grocery stores, pharmacie, etc. Sis a volunteer for St Lukes as Peppy the clown. She has a very low income and needs to get the chair repaired quickly. Anyone interested needs to contact Karen Haverly, or Carol Luth at 398-3644. Photos are available at the office. | ||||

| 225 - Modification of Carl Professional Rotary Trimmer to improve operator interface ![]() | Hills and Dales, James Klossner, Vocational Cordinator | Dec 16, 2003 | Russell Schuchmann | Dec 17, 2003 |
| A Carl Professional Rotary Trimmer, Model RT0200, has been used by Hills and Dales to cut labels to size. This trimmer requires the operator to slide the rotary blade assembly along a rail while exerting enough downward force to overcome springs to lower the blade and clamp the paper. Most clients are not able to consistently apply the force necessary to cleanly cut the labels. A modification is desired that will make it easier to achieve good cuts without the degree of downward pressure that is currently required. | ||||

| This is mainly a wood shop project. We have 1 that I'll try to bring to the next meeting. It is a jig that helps a consumer tri-fold billing items to stuff into an envelope. It is made of a plywood tray; a small piece of smooth-edged sheet metal; a small hinge and some wood trim. Basically the plywood tray cradles an 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paper. The piece of metal on the hinge swings into position over the middle of the paper. The consumer then folds the top of the paper down and the bottom of the paper up. It works great, but we need another one. Our target date is the first part of November. Thanks for considering the project. If you have any questions, let me know. | ||||

| 49 - Dynamyte Transporter Cart to hold a voice synthesizer communication device ![]() | Kirkwood Community College | Mar 14, 2002 | Dick kittrell | Oct 10, 2001 |
| A 5 year old day care client uses a portable computer with a touch-screen as a communication device which vocalizes pre-programmed phrases in response to her touch-screen inputs. Currently, this computer requires an assistive adult to move and secure in some manner in the new location, every time she moves about the room or rooms, because it is a very expensive device, and she cannot be expected to either comprehend the value or exhibit proper care for it. The result is that every time the client, who has no speech capability, moves is deprived of any communication until the assistive adult can complete the move. What is desired is a way for the client to move the device herself in a way which both protects the device and allows it to remain useful. An additional requirement is that the transporter provide some measure of walking support to overcome weakness in both legs. | ||||

| 145 - Recreational Trail Usage Counter ![]() | Linn County Trail Association; Ron McGraw 319-365-1374 | Oct 30, 2002 | Dick kittrell | Jun 28, 2005 |
| The Linn County Trail Association is looking for help to develop concepts and to implement working hardware to automatically count trail users on our local trails. This task presents some interesting challenges. The trails are used by walkers, runners, skaters, and cyclists. They move at various speeds in both directions in single file and in parallel. While a simple counter has value, a more complete solution would account for people pushing strollers and that bikes are tandems, recumbents, with child seats or "half a cycle" attached. The count needs to have credibility. Some degree of concealment or vandal proofing would also be helpful. For more information, contact Ron McGraw at 319-365-1374 or via email at rcmcgraw@mcleodusa.net. | ||||

| Help design & install tiny lights in uniquely designed boxes called the Box of Hope© - for collecting donations for the homeless in Linn County. Novak Design Group and Moss Enterprises are donating the design and manufacture of ten (10) boxes. The 2005 Box of Hope© is designed as elaborate interpretations of the Grant Wood painted house (8"Wx10"Lx8"H) in "American Gothic" – with windows to see a golf ball on a tee. Need a light mounted inside the box with circuitry & on/off switch located in a wooden base holding the box (est. 12”x14”x2”) beside an invitation to “Light Up Hope”. The boxes will be placed in the club house of area golf courses. A button to turn on the light will more likely get golfers to donate. | 229 - Heart of Iowa Child Care Room Upgrade ![]() | Heart of Iowa Mother and Child Treatment Center | Mar 15, 2004 | Helen Potthoff | May 5, 2005 |
| The Heart of Iowa is a mother and child substance abuse treatment center. We serve women who have their children livign with them and women who are pregnant. Few substance abuse treatment programs provide treatment without breaking up the family. The more intact the family can remain, the stronger the mother/child bond can remain, and the healthier the whole family will be at the end of the mother's treatment. Our child care center is fully icensed and provides specialized training to our staff who serve these special needs children. The center has recently moved to a remodleled facility where the first phase of remodeling was completed about two years ago. We are continuing the remodeling project as money and personnel permit. We have received a contribution that allows us to purchase some much needed cabinetry to keep teacher materials out of reach of the children, and toys conveniently within the child's reach. Our staff at Heart of Iowa is severely limited, so while we have the money to purchase the equipment, it will be difficult for our maintenance staff to find the time to install it. We also have playground paint to put foursquare and hopscotch on our playground area, but no one to do the painting. Our rooms are badly in need of painting, but, again, while we can obtain the paint, we do not have persons to apply the paint. The Heart of Iowa commits resources on an on-going basis to keep these upgrades moving forward, but the children will benefit greatly from the boost volunteer help could bring to the project. We greatly appreciate your consideration and will work closely with volunteers to support the good work you are offering. | ||||

| The Science Station seeks volunteers to assist in maintenance and repair of current exhibits and construction of new exhibits. In particular, a number of exhibits are close to retirement due to age, lack of available parts, or other damage. We would like to rehabilitate these, but many will have to be re-engineered to make them viable. In addition, we are seeking volunteers to assist in the creation of new exhibits. Our educational staff has several science-based exhibits they would like to complete, but Science Station does not have the capacity to create them in-house, and purchase costs of similar exhibits are prohibitive. | ||||
