The Lego Mindstorms robot RCX 1.0 uses 6 AA batteries. It becomes very expensive to keep fresh batteries in the robots. A more economical source of power is needed. The robots are used in First Lego League projects for 3rd through 5th grade.
A regulated 9 volt power supply was purchased. A wooden block the size of the battery compartment is used to connect the power supply to the robot. Holes are drilled crosswise at either end of the block to line up with the battery contacts. Another hole is drilled lengthwise centered on the block. Wire is fed through the center hole and out the holes lining up with the battery contacts. Wood screws are used for the contacts. When screwed into the wood block, the threads will cut through the wire insulation to make contact.
RCRV designer is John Wauer, and was requested by Wright elementary school, Cedar Rapids. The project was begun Apr 17, 2002 and completed Apr 25, 2002.
